Mother Earth

Written by: Madhukantha Kamath

Revered Mother Earth,
Thou art the sustainer of all things living,
Nurturing, nourishing,energy and life -giving!
An abundance of food and fodder you provide
On the strength of  your treasures all people ride!
Here all animals live in harmony with Nature
So kind and bountiful is Mother's stature!
Our salutations to you Mother Earth.

Dear Mother Earth,
Myriad hues of the rainbow you portray,
Marvellous are the unseen Artist's ways!
Fields glow golden with sunkissed rays,
Your majestic beauty never ceases to amaze!
Earth smiles through emerald green leaves,
The blue sky peeps through tall grand trees.
Our salutations to you Mother Earth!

For countless years, men have extracted from Earth's core
All this with great patience and happiness she bore
Her natural resources empowered many a nation
Of all elements She is the final culmination.
She is the receptacle, the womb, the centre of creation
Providing beneath our feet a reliable foundation.

Wounded men are slowly dying
Widowed women, orphaned children sit crying,
Despots and fanatics spreading hatred,
Earth's bosom torn by bloodshed;
bullets and shrapnel everywhere are flying
a mute spectator, Earth's left sighing!

By overpopulation, illiteracy and a plethora of
social evils Earth's been blazed,
with dowry deaths, infanticide and child labour
She is faced.
Amputated by clearing of forests, mining and quarrying
Mother Earth's left all bereft, wounded and blistering
It's about time we stop this mutilation
Let's think and ponder about Earth's emancipation.

It's time we wiped away Mother's tears
and put to rest all her fears.
Come all of you my dears,
Lend us your ears
Come, let us pledge to spread education,
Let's take an oath to help in afforestation
Let us work to control the growth of population
Eradicate dowry and sex determination.
Reduce mining and quarrying, keep Mother whole.
Let world peace , nuclear disarmament be every nation's goal
Mother Earth's been plundered enough
Cleanse her of all evils though it may be tough.
Stop racial discrimination and spread of diseases;
The legacy we inherited, enriched we should bequeath
Strive to preserve not to impoverish
The choice is yours:
to pollute and perish or
to conserve and flourish!
